Church Announces Major Temple Renovation in San Diego, California

The San Diego California Temple will shortly close, according to a statement made on April 17, 2023 by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The temple will undergo significant renovations.

In July 2023, the temple will close for significant restoration. Dates for the public open house and rededication, as well as the renovation’s completion date, will be revealed later.

During the closure, Latter-day Saints in southern California are urged to visit other temples nearby.

The San Diego California Temple was introduced on April 7, 1984, by the then-President of the Church, Spencer W. Kimball, and dedicated on April 25, 1993, by President Gordon B. Hinckley. In order to undergo a significant renovation and seismic improvement, it was closed in January 2018. On May 19, 2019, it reopened following more than a year of construction.

California is home to 12 houses of the Lord, including temples that have been announced for San Jose and Bakersfield by President Russell M. Nelson in the April 2023 general conference. Other temples in use or under construction in the state include the Feather River, Fresno, Los Angeles, Modesto, Newport Beach, Oakland, Redlands, Sacramento and Yorba Linda California Temples.
